The Story: From Cessnas to Commercial Jets
For years, the only airport in the Mentawai Islands was the tiny Rokot Sipora Airport - a small airstrip that could only handle Cessna aircraft carrying 12 passengers. The runway had eroded to just 800 meters due to coastal erosion, making it increasingly risky for even small planes.
Recognizing the islands' immense tourism potential, the Indonesian government embarked on an ambitious infrastructure project to transform air access to the Mentawais.

Presidential Inauguration
On October 25, 2023, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) personally inaugurated the New Mentawai Airport, highlighting its importance for national connectivity and tourism.
"Let us hope that by providing a landing ground for ATR planes, the airport will attract more tourists to come visit Mentawai Islands, especially those who love surfing. We hope that surfing tourism activities will flourish."
— President Joko Widodo
The President expressed optimism that the airport would enhance regional connectivity, facilitate business development, and elevate living standards for local communities.

Susi Air flights are ideal for:
- Families with children (avoiding long ferry ride)
- Travelers without heavy gear
- Short trips or business travel
- Those prone to seasickness
Future Commercial Airlines
The West Sumatra Provincial Government is actively working to establish regular commercial routes with larger airlines:
- Wings Air: Launched flights in March 2025 but suspended operations in April 2025. May resume in future.
- Citilink: In discussions for potential routes
- Pelita Air Service: Under consideration
The government has proposed a subsidy program to encourage airlines to establish regular routes to Mentawai.
How This Changes Surf Travel
Advantages
- Speed: 40 minutes vs 4 hours by ferry
- Weather independence: Flights operate regardless of sea conditions
- Comfort: No seasickness, smoother journey
- Strike missions: Fly in when swell hits, maximize wave time
- Accessibility: Opens islands to non-surfers, families, elderly travelers
Considerations
- Surfboard transport: Still limited on small aircraft
- Flight frequency: Only 3 flights per week currently
- Early departures: 7am flights require overnight in Padang
- Capacity: Small planes book out quickly in peak season
- Cost: More expensive than ferry for budget travelers with boards
Impact on Tourism
The new airport is expected to significantly boost tourism to the Mentawai Islands:
10x
Increase in air passenger capacity
50K+
Potential annual air arrivals
3hrs
Travel time saved vs ferry
Economic Benefits
- Increased tourist arrivals and spending
- Job creation in aviation, hospitality, and services
- Higher land values near airport and tourist areas
- Improved emergency response capability (medical evacuations)
- Better disaster preparedness (earthquake/tsunami access)
Concerns
- Potential overcrowding at popular surf breaks
- Environmental impact of increased tourism
- Rising costs for locals and budget travelers
- Cultural impact on indigenous Mentawai communities
Booking Flights
How to Book Susi Air
- Online: Susi Air website (can be unreliable, may not accept international cards)
- Through Traveloka: Indonesian travel booking platform
- Through your resort: Most resorts can arrange bookings locally
- Travel agent: Indonesian travel agents can book on your behalf
💡 Pro Tips
- Book early - flights fill up quickly, especially peak season
- Have your resort help with booking if possible
- Confirm baggage rules before booking
- Arrive at airport early (limited facilities)
- Bring snacks and water - limited services at Mentawai airport
Getting from the Airport
Rokot Airport is located in Sipora, near the town of Tuapeijat. Transfers to resorts:
- South Sipora (Hollow Trees area): ~1.5-2 hours by road or boat
- North Sipora: ~1-1.5 hours by road or boat
- Playgrounds area: Boat transfer required (2-3 hours)
- Siberut/Pagai: Boat transfer required (varies)
Most resorts arrange transfers from the airport - confirm arrangements when booking.
The Future
The Indonesian government has ambitious plans for Mentawai tourism:
- More airlines: Working to attract Wings Air, Citilink, and others
- International connections: Potential future routes from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur
- Infrastructure: Road improvements connecting airport to tourist areas
- Tourism promotion: Marketing Mentawai as a world-class surf destination
- Sustainable development: Balancing growth with environmental protection
🌊 What This Means for Surfers
The new airport is a game-changer for surf travel to the Mentawais. While the ferry remains the best option for those traveling with boards, the airport opens up new possibilities:
- Strike missions: Fly in when conditions are perfect
- Split logistics: Fly yourself, ship boards separately
- Non-surfing partners: Easier travel for families and non-surfers
- Emergency access: Faster medical evacuation if needed
The wave quality hasn't changed - Hollow Trees still delivers world-class barrels. Getting there is just a bit easier now!
